Key Takeaways:
The Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern combination continues moving through the federal review process. With the STB accepting the joint application for review, both railroads will continue working with regulators to advance a more competitive, coast-to-coast freight network for American shippers and consumers.

A transcontinental railroad will strengthen competition and improve supply chain efficiency. Railroad leaders say a seamless coast-to-coast network will help reduce costs, improve service reliability and create new opportunities for customers across the country.

Big Boy No. 4014 is bringing rail history to communities nationwide during America’s 250th anniversary celebration. The locomotive’s first-ever coast-to-coast tour highlights the role railroads have played in connecting the nation and supporting economic growth.
Key Takeaways:
  • A seamless transcontinental network expands freight options. The combination would create America’s first single-line coast-to-coast railroad with new lanes, faster routing and broader market access.
  • Single-line service reduces supply chain friction. Fewer handoffs and more direct routing are designed to improve speed, reliability and efficiency for long-distance freight movement.
  • The proposed combination strengthens American competitiveness. The applicationhighlights supply chain growth, new union jobs, and expanded rail capacity as long-term economic benefits.

Before Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 departed Chicago this morning, CEO Jim Vena joined CNBC’s Squawk Box to outline next steps toward creating America’s first transcontinental railroad following the Surface Transportation Board (STB)’s acceptance of its joint application with Norfolk Southern.

Vena said the railroad will continue working closely with the STB and stands ready to provide additional information as the process moves forward, with a targeted completion in mid-2027.

“We’re going to give our customers a better product,” Vena said.

After the interview, No. 4014 continued east on its first-ever coast-to-coast tour. About 61,000 rail fans visited during the West Chicago display day alone, with hundreds of thousands more expected to see the locomotive along its East Coast route.

“This locomotive behind us is our little thing we’re doing for the country to celebrate America’s 250th,” Vena said. “It’s a symbol of what America can do.”
